The entertainment world is experiencing an intentional shift towards diversity and inclusivity. I recently wrote a feature for a groundbreaking horror screenwriting lab dedicated to promoting diverse voices. This experience deepened my understanding of this cultural influence. The lab provided a platform to showcase the talent of female, BIPOC, and/or LGBTQ+ creators in the historically exclusive horror genre. One important lesson was the profound impact of portraying a trans character as a hero rather than a victim.

In this article, I explore ways the entertainment industry can further LGBTQ+ inclusivity and representation, highlighting accomplishments and ensuring these voices are authentically recognized and heard.

Shifting Narratives: Heroes, Not Victims

In my feature, the protagonist, a trans individual, emerges as the hero rather than a victim. This narrative choice is empowering, challenging the often one-dimensional portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters. By presenting LGBTQ+ individuals as complex, capable heroes, we can reshape perceptions and provide empowering role models. This shift requires writers and creators to actively seek and tell stories highlighting the strength, resilience, and diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences.

Creating Inclusive Spaces for Talent

To achieve inclusivity, we must encourage diversity in writers’ rooms, support LGBTQ+ talent, promote diversity behind the camera, and create complex LGBTQ+ characters. Celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ filmmakers is crucial. Programs like the horror screenwriting lab offer platforms for underrepresented voices to develop and showcase their skills, covering various genres and providing guidance, financial support, and visibility. Industry decision-makers should commit to inclusive recruitment practices to ensure equal opportunities for writers, directors, producers, and actors from diverse backgrounds.

Moving Beyond Pride Parades: Building Lasting Representation

Pride month is a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ identity and resilience, acknowledging the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. But true inclusivity goes beyond parades and rainbows. We need to tell LGBTQ+ stories year-round by diverse storytellers and for a diverse audience.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ Achievements

While acknowledging the historical challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, it’s essential to celebrate their accomplishments. Pride should also serve as an opportunity to recognize the triumphs and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals in entertainment. Award ceremonies, cultural events, and media platforms should spotlight LGBTQ+ stories and creators, showcasing their achievements and promoting their representation in mainstream media.

Authentic Representation Matters

It is crucial to prioritize authenticity in representation. This means involving LGBTQ+ creators in the storytelling process and ensuring these stories are portrayed with depth and accuracy, steering clear of stereotypes. It’s about exploring diverse LGBTQ+ experiences to reflect the community’s true diversity accurately. This is not merely a passing trend but a necessary step for the industry to move forward.

Education and Awareness

Education is crucial in promoting inclusivity and creating supportive environments for LGBTQ+ individuals. Industry professionals should strive to understand the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and actively foster awareness and empathy through workshops, seminars, and access to resources.

My experience with the horror screenwriting lab showed me the incredible impact of inclusive storytelling. When we portray LGBTQ+ characters as heroes rather than victims, we break down stereotypes and inspire our audience. We can work towards a more inclusive and diverse industry by creating inclusive spaces, supporting marginalized creators, and promoting education. Let’s celebrate the LGBTQ+ community by ensuring their stories are seen and heard, honoring their impact, and championing their experiences.
